The Story

The End of the Long Watch

For nearly half a century, the men and women of the Strategic Air Command (SAC) stood ready around the clock. They flew. They manned the silos. They sat alert at bases like Eaker Air Force Base (Blytheville, Arkansas) — where the gates have long since closed and the runways have gone quiet.

They were told their service was a deterrent. That their job was to be ready so the war would never come. It didn't.

But theirs was a war fought in silence — a twilight struggle that lasted longer than any "hot" war in our history. When it ended, there was no parade. There was no homecoming. Just an order to stand down, a flag lowered, and a generation of veterans who went back to civilian life with stories most of the country never learned about.

The Last Salute is for them.

It's a song about the moment the order finally came. About the weight of a uniform folded and put away. About what we owe the people who kept the watch — and what it means to finally honor them.
